The age old saying goes 'healthy skin comes from within' and whilst it seems like a bit of a cliché it's absolutely true. What we eat can have a real effect on our skin and so if you're experiencing skin issues often the first thing to look at is your diet. We've put together a quick list of 5 nutrient rich beauty super foods that will have your face looking flawless in no time at all.

1. Lemons

Acne isn't just an issue for hormonal teenagers. It's estimated that around 50% of women will experience acne at some point in their adult lives. There's a knock on effect with our mental health too, as acne has been linked to low self esteem and even depression in some cases. If you're concerned about adult acne, incorporating more vitamin C into your diet could definitely help. Start the day with a slice of lemon in hot water, and sip it before breakfast to get the full detoxifying benefits. One cup of fresh lemon juice provides 187 percent of your daily recommended serving of vitamin C as well as a decent dose of potassium, magnesium and copper. For even better results, pair your detox drink with a good daily facial cleanser like this one from Magic Organic Apothecary.

2. Chocolate (seriously!)

We're usually told to avoid greasy high fat foods for better skin, so chocolate seems like an odd choice, but in fact if you choose the right kind of chocolate you can really reap the benefits. Good quality dark chocolate hosts a range of potent antioxidants. These antioxidants protect your skin from free radical damage; keeping it soft, supple and juvenile for long. Aim for at least 70% cocoa to get the most out of your sweet treat.

3. Nuts

Nuts are packed with fats which are essential for keeping our skin looking healthy. If you're looking to give your skin a boost, pack your handbag with a healthy bag of almonds. Not only are they delicious but they're full of healthy fats, significant protein, important minerals like magnesium, copper, manganese and phosphorus, and are high in vitamin E and B vitamins.

4. Peppers

Could Mexican food help reduce crows feet? Red and yellow peppers contain good levels of carotenoids which can decrease skin's sensitivity to the sun. Sun damage often effects the thinest and most sensitive areas, so if you're starting to show ageing around your eyes, try increasing your uptake of these crunchy delicious veggies.

5. Soy

Soy contains minerals and proteins that have been shown to reduce hyperpigmentation as well as increasing levels of hyaluronic acid. Introducing soy into your diet is easy. Try switching out your regular latte for a soy alternative every once in a while, or you could hunt out some delicious edamame beans (which make for healthy snacking) to get your fix.

Eating right is about progress, not perfection so don't worry if you're not saintly of the time. Giving yourself time off to eat the foods that might not be great for your skin, but are good for your mental health is important (hello cheesecake!) but if you're looking to get extra some nutrients into your diet you could try incorporating supplements. Fountain have a great range of liquid beauty boosters to help rejuvenate your skin. The Beauty Molecule provides 40mg resveratrol, a natural phenol that's found in the skin of red grapes and in Japanese knotweed which has been proven to offer the longevity effects of calorie restriction, promote normal cell division and offer excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Free from artificial colours and flavours.

You can also get your fish oil fix fuss free with Bare Biology Lion Heart Capsules which contain huge amounts of Omega 3 which is essential for healthy looking skin.
