10 Amazing Uses For Coconut Oil

It's no secret, but coconut oil is everywhere right now. This versatile, sweet smelling miracle oil is being used in all kinds of natural beauty remedies, and coconut oil fans are evangelical about its properties.

Used on its own, or as a base for beauty products (coconut oil used in one of our favourite beauty balms - MOA's The Green Balm!) this little ingredient has some seriously incredible beauty uses. So we've put together a list of 10 amazing beauty uses for coconut oil.

1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling or "kavala" / "gundusha," is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that involves swishing warm oil around your mouth for around 20 minutes. The practice can whiten teeth naturally and some devotees claim it helps to pull the toxins out of your body.

Fancy giving it a try? All you need to do is take a spoonful (try a teaspoon if you're new as it can feel a bit weird at first!) and swish it around your teeth for as long as you can stand. 20 minutes is about right but you might have to work up to it. When we tried it, we did it first thing in the morning in the shower during the normal morning routine. Teeth did look a bit whiter after a few weeks, but long term it could have more noticeable results.

2. Lip Balm
Can't find your trusty lip balm? A little bit of coconut oil should do the trick. It has rich moisturising properties and will soothe chapped lips.

3. Intensive Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Dry, frazzled hair can benefit from a coconut oil hair mask. If your follicles are in need of a boost this could be just the ticket. Warm the oil first, and smooth a generous amount through your hair and leave on for a few hours. If you can stand leaving it in overnight, then even better! Rinse, shampoo and condition as normal.

4. Hair Growth

The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles and can help stimulate hair growth. Try a weekly coconut oil hair mask to and you'll soon start to see the difference.

5. Cuticle Oil

If you suffer from dry hands and nails, a little bit of coconut oil rubbed into the cuticles can soften the skin and help your manicure last longer.

6. Massage Oil

For an indulgent, DIY massage oil all you have to do is blend your coconut oil with a few drops of your favourite essential oil for a soothing massage oil. We recommend Aroma Works oils, which are pure, natural and potent.

7. Make Up Brush Cleaner

Add coconut oil to baby shampoo or anti bacterial soap for a quick make up brush cleaner that will leave your brushes soft and gleaming.

8. Make Up Remover

If your make up won't budge, a little coconut up oil should lift even the most stubborn products. Swirl a little oil on your skin, rub in, rinse and then cleanse as normal. Some people find that coconut oil can clog pores though, so if you're particularly sensitive to break outs, use sparingly.

9. Eyebrow Growth

Some people swear by coconut oil for hair growth. If your eyebrows are sparse, brushing a small amount of coconut oil through them could help them grow.

10. Soften Feet

The hyper moisturising effects of coconut oil on even the driest of skin can do wonders for cracked feet. Moisturise coconut oil into your feet and pop on a pair of clean socks before bedtime and wake up with soft toes that are sandal season ready!

If you want to supercharge the powers of coconut oil, we recommend Magic Organic Apothecary's The Green Balm which contains coconut oil as well as a host of incredible healing herbs.
