5 Foods To Help You Sleep Better

According to the latest studies, we're sleeping fewer hours than we should, and when we do sleep, it's not as restful as it could be. Poor sleeping habits can effect our health and wellbeing in a serious way. Not getting enough can lead to weight gain, poor concentration and even our skin can suffer if we're not careful.

When insomnia gets really bad, it's time for a medical intervention but if you're looking to improve your sleep naturally your diet could play a big part in that. Here are 5 foods that could help you get some shut eye.

1. Bananas

Banana is high in magnesium and calcium and experts say these minerals can make you feel sleepy. It also contains the amino acid tryptophan which has been linked to better sleep. If you don't get that hungry before bed, you could try blending a banana with warm almond milk (almonds also contain tryptophan and magnesium, which is a muscle relaxant) for a dreamy night time drink.

2. Cheese

That old wives tale about eating cheese before bed giving you nightmares might not hold much truth, but the dairy in the cheese, which also contains high amounts of calcium, can help ease you into the land of nod.

3. Lettuce

Add a salad to your evening meal, and you could be on to a winner.  Lettuce contains lactucarium, which can have sedative properties and has been known to affect the brain similarly to opium. If you're brave enough you could try lettuce tea, but if not, try substituting your normal evening meal with a light bright salad, packed with lettuce.

4. Honey

Delicious and sweet, but also one of nature's miracles. The natural sugar in honey slightly raises your insulin levels and allows tryptophan to enter the brain more easily. Spoon a little bit into your favourite herbal tea for a tasty kick, packed with benefits.

5. Sleep Tea

A hot cup of non caffeinated tea could help you prepare your body for bedtime. The soothing effects of chamomile tea are well documented, but ingredients like lemon balm and hibiscus are also sleep aids. TEATOX Skinny Good Night Tea contains both, as well as peppermint and yarrow to aid digestion.
