Getting too much sun, is never fun. We all know that overexposure to UV rays can cause serious side effects, from premature ageing to skin cancer, so the best solution is to ensure you're always properly protected and avoid getting sunburned in the first place. That said, sometimes accidents happen, and occasionally we find ourselves a little bit sore after an afternoon by the pool. Here are a few quick remedies you can use, if you've been caught out and ended up a little bit sunburned.
1. Rehydrate As your skin will be dehydrated, it's important to replace lost fluids as soon as possible. Avoid caffeinated drinks as they can dehydrate you further, and instead opt for iced water, herbal teas and even coconut water to replenish and rebalance. 2. Avoid perfumes Your skin is going to be very sensitive, and alcohol based perfumes will dry your skin out even more. Try to avoid anything that will irritate the skin, and avoid perfume for a few days to give your skin a chance to heal. 3. Take a cold shower The soothing water will help to relax the skin, and the cooling effects of the water will provide a welcome distraction from the stinging pain. If you're not used to colder showers, try this little tip. Start with warm water and gradually decrease the temperature, as you won't feel the initial shock of the cold as your body acclimatises. 4. Use Aloe VeraAloe has been used for centuries to soothe and heal skin, and a cooling aloe gel can help to relieve some of the discomfort of sunburn whilst promoting the skin's natural recovery. If you're prone to peeling, you should gently exfoliate the skin during this process (very gently!) and continue to apply aloe morning, night and whenever you need a spot of relief.
