As a dancer and expert in the healing arts (Pilates, Shiatsu, and Traditional Chinese Facial Massage), Su-Man is a leading celebrity facialist-turned-skin care pioneer with a life-long passion for wellness. She is the woman behind Juliette Binoche’s radiant skin for over five years and is famous for her “natural alternative to botox” and “face lift in an hour." Su-Man's products are a hit with customers, so naturally, we couldn't wait to pick her brain about her skincare and wellness secrets.
1. What does your morning routine look like?
As soon as I wake up I lengthen my spine by leaning over the edge of the bed - this also stretched the back muscles - and then I rotate my spine side to side. This is the best time to stretch out and energise your body because this is when your body is in the most relaxed state. You can follow me on IG to see how I do it.
I then drink a glass of warm water mixed with honey and lemon to cleanse internally, followed by breakfast.
After shower I would massage my face and neck using my own skincare products for 2.5 minutes to awaken my facial muscles and allowing my face to have a natural glow throughout the day. I would continue with 5-10 minutes of exercises from head to toes to keep my ‘chi' flow smoothly. I then apply eyeliner and get ready for work.
It sounds a lot to do but seriously, once you get into its ritual, it will take you no time at all!
2. If you had to choose one, which product from your line would you not be without?
As I have a really dry skin, keeping it hydrated is essential so I would not go without my Rehydrating Toning Essence. It keeps my skin feeling comfortable all day long.
3. What was it that first appealed to you about starting your own business?
My life has been a series of beautiful accidents that have all merged into each other naturally. I grew up on a mud hut in a farm in Taiwan. I discovered dance at 19 and went on to be a professional dancer and learned the pleasure and freedom of doing something without words. After retiring I discovered my second love – Shiatsu that helped me understand the connection between physical and emotional well-being. Out of this I created my own facial technique and went onto being a facialist.
I was so unhappy with the products I was using for my facials. They were too heavy and not effective. So I decided to create my own. I wanted products that replicated my professional treatment and would work with simple application techniques. The formulas started at home in my kitchen. I tested them on my countless clients and was thrilled by the results. They were too. It meant they could take my facial magic home. I then sent them to two labs in France and Taiwan to refine for mass production. This is how Su-Man Skincare was born. I like to think what you get with my skincare is "the wisdom of ten thousand faces."That's at least how many people I've treated!
4. What’s your favourite part of your job?
Every face inspires me and gives me new ideas to work with, as everyone has a beautiful story to tell. Being able to transform each person and bring them to a better place makes me truly happy. In addition, creating lotions and potions in my kitchen to experiment something new keeps my spirit uplifted.
5. Can you share some top tips on glowing from the inside (wellness) and out (skincare & cosmetics)?
Don't disconnect your emotional and physical well-being and start young, start well and never stop!
We can have botox, fillers, facelifts to make ourselves look young but nothing can lift our internal organs if they are aged and damaged. These quick fixes will never recapture the light we were born with, which is so essential for youthfulness. Radiance is not just luminous skin but shining eyes, a shining presence which is felt as well as seen. So anti-ageing is not just about the face, it's whole body well being.
Apart from using good products and knowing how to use them, age prevention can be achieved by a healthy diet, being well hydrated inside and out (dehydration is horrible for ageing), a positive attitude towards life and ourselves and exercises that you enjoy.
I personally eat lots of food rich in antioxidants and vitamins. These protect my skin as well as nourish it. Here is my list:
A simple exercise I do a few times a day is a deep squat sit. It releases the ankles, knees, hips, back and shoulders. This opens up the energy channels in the body and keeps it alive and supple.
6.What is the best piece of beauty advice you have ever been given?
Don't roast yourself in the sun.
