At one point or another, we've heard that meditation is beneficial for our health and well-being. It's been used for thousands of years as a spiritual ritual to create inner peace, but now there is more research showing why exactly it's good for our body and mind.
We can eat healthily, exercise often, and avoid chemicals in our household and makeup, but what about our mind? Just like our fitness goals, it takes patience and consistency to see results. Start with a few minutes a day and increase to at least 21 minutes a day to reap the full benefits!
Here are 5 reasons why you should start meditating:
1. Reduces anxiety
Research shows that meditation actually strengthens a part of the brain that is activated when you're anxious!
2. Improves mood
Meditation can increase brain gray matter volume in parts of our brain that control our mood.
3. Increases attention and focus
Do you have trouble paying attention? Regular meditation shows that it increases activity in areas of our brain that are responsible for attention and focus.
4. Lessens stress
If you're stressed often, give meditation a try! Meditation is a natural way to relieve stress and can regulate an area in the brain that controls stress.
5. Slows cognitive decline
Neuroplasticity, your brain's ability to regenerate itself, decreases over time, but with mediation, it can slow down cognitive decline and preserve your neuroplasticity.
