Tea has officially come back! After a few years of coffee dominating Instagram (and our mornings) tea is officially fashionable again. There has been a huge rise in bloggers using detox teas for wellness and weight loss and now a lot of us are abandoning lattes for the simple (but delicious) taste of herbal tea.
We've fallen in love with tea too, and have added the German brand TEATOX and DIRTEA to our extensive list of exclusive brands. But it's not just about how it tastes, or works on your skin. Tea has some incredible health benefits too. Here are 6 facts about tea that you might not know.
1. It was discovered by accident
The legend goes that tea was first discovered by the Emperor of China in 2737 BC while he was boiling water under a tree. Which seems like an unlikely tale, but it all adds to the mysterious origin story.
Some leaves from the tree found their way into the boiling water so he took a sip and was surprised by how good it tasted. After his discovery tea then became popular among scholars and priests in China and Japan, who would drink tea to stay awake, study, and meditate. This is perhaps why it has long been associated with mindfulness, calm, spirituality, and wellbeing.
2. Green tea may help your eyesight
The eye, like any part of the body, can suffer oxidative stress, making it more susceptible to degeneration. A 2010 study found that components in green tea positively affected the tissues of the eyes, especially tissue related to the retina, helping them to regenerate.
3. It reduces stress
There's probably a reason why after a long day, or (minor) traumatic event someone will suggest popping the kettle on. Studies have found that black tea (usually drank with milk and a few biscuits) can help to reduce levels of stress hormones as well as helping to lower blood pressure. As the stress goes up, so does the blood pressure, so it's win / win.
4. It reduces puffy eyes
You may have already heard this one, and dismissed it as bit of an old wive's tale, but it works! Black tea has anti irritant properties, which reduce the tell take puffiness after a long day or late night. They can also reduce redness and inflammation. Don't go fishing them out of your cuppa when they're still hot though. For best results, put a few used tea bags in the refrigerator for an hour and rest them on your eyes.
5. It can stop you getting sick
Green tea contains catechins, a type of natural phenol and antioxidant. Some studies show that catechins can kill bacteria and inhibit viruses like the flu virus, potentially lowering your risk of getting sick during flu season. Drink up, it's for your health.
6. It can help you loose weight
Green tea can boost you metabolic rate in the short term which is why it makes sense that it could help you lose weight. Sip a cup before a work out to turbo charge your metabolism and get the most out of your gym session.
