As the summer is approaching we need level up our skin protection. Pollution and UV-rays are raising high these days and we need full protection against both to prevent skin damage. We enlisted the help of Dr. Daria Voropai, a cosmetic dermatologist who works often in London.
"What most people don’t know SPF only protects us against UVB-rays. These rays are the ones responsible for skin burning, however, there are also UVA rays which are mostly responsible for skin aging. Hence it is important when choosing a sun protection to look at the protection against both rays - the new UVA logo with its PPD (which is persistent pigment darkening) should be always present."

Indoors or outdoors, summer or winter, it's important to wear a sun cream with an SPF 30. Dr. Varopai explains, "Don’t forget, UVB are rising in the summer but the UVA rays are still high and present during the whole year. A high SPF should be in your routine skin care regime to prevent aging and pigmentation lesions (i.e. sun damage). For me, a good creme will have an SPF between 30-50 and a PPD level higher than 15."
"The other important factor is the thickness of applying the creme, the thicker your layer the better your protection," says Dr. Varopai. You can use sun protective clothing, a hat, or sunglasses to also protect yourself from the sun's rays. Dr. Varopai advises her "clients to layer their sun protection, which means you start with your SPF creme, then you apply your foundation (if applicable) with a SPF and on top of that, use a special SPF 50 powder (or spray), which you can easily top up during the day."
We often slater on the sunscreen on our face, but there are other areas that can burn too. Your lips and ears are often neglected, but the chest and neck are susceptible to sun damage as well. The sun is a huge factor in skin aging, so without the right protection, your chest and neck can age you!
