For anyone with sensitive skin, choosing the right products can make a real difference to your daily routine. Often, reaching for the wrong blend of ingredients can cause nightmare break outs, flaky dry patches and leave your skin feeling tight, irritated and sore.

Here are five of the biggest questions people often have about sensitive skin, and what you can do about it,

What is sensitive skin?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), sensitive skin is categorised into four different types: rosacea, acne, burning and stinging and contact dermatitis which includes allergies and irritants. If you often find your skin feeling tight, sore and dry then it’s possible you have sensitive skin.

What causes it?

Lots of things can cause your skin to flare up. From repeated exposure to the sun, your genetics and even dietary issues. If you think your skin issues might be linked to an allergy then it might be worth visiting your doctor or even doing an elimination diet to find out the root cause of your skin issues.

What can I do to protect my skin?

It goes without saying, but always ensure you’re using a moisturiser with a good SPF. Not only will this prevent your skin from being irritated when exposed to the sun, but blocking out its harmful rays will prevent your skin from ageing rapidly and prematurely. Remember to keep yourself hydrated, and choose products that are specially formulated for your skin type. Suki Skincare is a great example of a full and diverse range specially formulated for all kinds of skin issues. Skin care shouldn't stop at your face and neck, if you suffer from dry sensitive skin, chances are you'll find dry problem areas elsewhere on your body. A natural moisturiser like this rose petal body lotion from Ilcsi Skincare nourishes
all skin types, improves elasticity, its daily use makes dry and rough skin smooth and soft.

What about acne?

Even dry, sensitive skin is prone to breakouts. What’s important is that you don’t irritate it further by using harsh products, and scrubbing at the skin. It’ll only cause further irritation in the long run. Cloud 9 skin solutions offer a great spot gel that features Vitamin B3 and Vitamin E which controls oil and bacteria without being too harsh on the skin. It’s also free rom Parabens, Formaldehyde, Sulphates, Phthalates, Silicones, Artificial colours/dyes, SLS, SLES and DEAs all of which can really exacerbate skin problems.

Can I wear make up?

As with your skincare routine, your make up should also take into account your various sensitivities. Some people find that foundation can clog their pores, and many products on the market use ingredients which can cause flare ups and issues. If you want some coverage but don’t always want to wear a full face, it’s worth looking into a light tinted moisturiser that will give you a healthy glow without the heavy feeling that foundation can sometimes bring. Suki skincare offer a great active moisturiser that provides flawless looking skin but doesn’t settle into lines or look unnatural.
