There’s no denying that a great tan can make you feel great, but with the sun’s harmful rays linked to premature ageing and skin cancer, it’s much easier (and safer) to fake it. Historically, fake tanning has been a bit of a no-go area for the inexperienced but it doesn’t need to be intimidating. If you want to move over to the dark side, but you’re not sure where to begin, fear not. We’re here to give you a mini masterclass. Say goodbye to patchy knees and unappealing streaks with our 3 step guide to becoming a flawless bronzed goddess.

1) Exfoliate.

The first thing you need to do is prepare your skin, and create a nice soft base to work with. Dry skin is the enemy of fake tan, as the pigment can cling to dry patches and create an uneven look. Before you even touch the self tanner, the first step is buff away the dead skin, unclog your pores and even out your skin tone with a good scrub down. We recommend this Imperial Rice Body Scrub from Ling Skincare. This delicious recipe dating back to the Chinese Imperial dynasty contains sweet almond, rice and papaya enzymes soften rough patches to reveal smoother skin.

2) Moisturise

After all that scrubbing, you need to rehydrate your skin with a good moisturizer like this rich Kukui Oil Hydrating Body Lotion from Connock London. Slather it from head to toe to soften and nourish your skin, and pay attention to dry rough patches like the knees and elbows, as this is often where tan gathers.

3) Tan

Here comes the tricky bit. Avoid orange fingers by making sure you’re wearing gloves, and start off slowly. You can always build more product, but it’s much harder to take off so layer up if you need to but remember to keep it natural. Apply from the bottom up, starting at your ankles and rub in circles to make sure you don’t miss any bits! Once your tan has dried, wear loose fitting clothes and wait for the colour to develop. Most products recommend waiting 4 - 6 hours until you shower again.

If you’re not ready to take the plunge for a full on tan, but you still want flawless, bronzed limbs then why not try Prtty Peaushun Skin Tight Body Lotion. This tinted skin firming lotion has an A-List appeal and has graced the bodies of stars like Cate Blanchett and Rhianna.
